What was involved
The project site was identified for a solar development project by Enviromena’s development team in late summer 2022 and Enviromena’s experienced land acquisition team agreed long-term lease terms with the landowner. An application for grid capacity was submitted to the local DNO, Northern Powergrid.
Daisy Hill will be developed on land near in Burstwick / Elstronwick. There were several development challenges which had to be overcome during the planning process, and a significant amount of community engagement took place in the local community both before and during the planning process to help shape the development.
Planning approval
A key consideration during the planning process was the site’s impact on ornithology, largely due to the site’s proximity to the Humber Estuary. A considerable number of bird surveys were undertaken both before and during the planning process in order to inform the final designs of the site, and satisfy the requirements of the council’s ecology officer and furthermore, Natural England.
Our development team and expert consultant, Biodiverse worked closely with both parties to create skylark and curlew mitigation areas on and off site and the efforts of the team to did not go unnoticed by Natural England who commented: “It’s great to see more developers being willing to make design amendments for nature”.
In addition to ecological constraints, special attention also needed to be paid to drainage matters and landscape and visual. Once again, the team worked closely with consultees to agree plans which led to all statutory consultees supporting the development and the project receiving a unanimous vote of approval at planning committee.
The project was supported by three local parish councils and received very few local objections. From the outset, the development team worked closely with the local community to listen to any concerns and ideas about the project plans. These views were taken into consideration and used to shape the scheme.
A community benefit fund has been ringfenced to support projects and initiatives in the local area, and we have already supported some smaller projects in the area working with the parish councils and local schools.
Management of the site
Enviromena will own and operate the site utilising the expertise of our in-house O&M and asset management teams. This includes the team carrying out performance monitoring, security monitoring, preventative / reactive maintenance, landscape management all while ensuring safety is maintained.
